Chapter 8 – Evan

Like most of the other dragons at InnoCell, Evan lived on the outskirts of Blackfall instead of in the city itself. It gave him more time in the wilderness, with his magic, and in his dragon form, all of which he would have been much more restricted on if he lived in the city. He did have a suite at the highest levels of the InnoCell headquarters for when he was on a time crunch for a project and couldn't spend the time commuting, but thankfully, these days that was rare, even though he was busier than ever.

Evan glanced out the front windows of his house, which opened into the spacious, minimalist living area. His house was huge, though not quite a mansion; he didn't see the need for so much space. Yet, based on what Liam said the other day, Evan worried that it would be too much. Instead of impressing Katie, he might just scare her more. But, when he thought about hiding his things so it wouldn't seem like too much, he stopped himself. Katie needed to see who he was, without him trying to hide anything. She knew what his job was, and, inevitably, about his wealth, and she'd agreed to come anyway.

He and the guys always joked about how money gave them access to so many different kinds of women, but never had Evan considered how it might intimidate the very kinds of women that Evan wanted to attract. After putting more thought into it, he found it somewhat likely that, based on what he knew about Katie, that she'd disappeared for that reason. At least, in part. He couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more.

Tonight, he wouldn't do anything too fancy. He'd grill them some steaks, and while he cooked, they'd get to know each other better.

Compared to everything else Evan had to do in his life, this should have been very easy to do. But he found himself paralyzed with the thought of messing up and losing his chance with Katie. It wasn't even necessarily that he wanted to sleep with her again—though, admittedly, he did; he couldn't stop himself from reliving their hot, sweaty nights together all those years ago—but instead because he wanted to become a part of her life, and his son's. Even if that meant just accepting the possibility of friendship, even while he hoped for something more.

While waiting, Evan distracted himself by preparing the vegetables to roast for their dinner and then double-checked that he had everything else he needed for the night. When the vegetables were almost ready, the doorbell rang, and his heart leaped.

Evan hurried to the door, swinging it open to find Katie standing there. She held her hands clasped together in front of her short gold and yellow summer dress, which was sheer and wispy enough to make her look like a fairy, and yet, she was more beautiful than any fairy Evan had seen in his life. In fact, no one could ever surpass Katie in his eyes.
